CO2 Laser Post-Care Tips for Phoenix Patients

I get asked this all the time: “Okay, I had my laser treatment, now what?” The truth is, aftercare plays a big role in your results, not just the treatment itself. If you’re in Phoenix, a few extra factors matter, especially the intense sun and heat. Let’s go over what you should do after treatment and how long to keep it up.

Immediate Care (Days 1–3)

The first few days after your fractional CO2 laser treatment are really about managing the acute injury and keeping your skin comfortable while it starts healing. Here’s my go-to routine:

First, use cool, diluted vinegar soaks or a hypochlorous acid spray. For a vinegar soak, mix about 1 teaspoon of white vinegar with 2 cups of water. Use a soft cloth to gently remove any discharge or oozing. The goal is to soothe the skin and keep it clean, not to scrub it.

You can also purchase hypochlorous acid sprays online. I like CLn MD and Hydrinity Hyacin Active Spray, which provides a cooling mist.

Hypochlorous acid is both anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory. Hydrinity also makes a hydrating sheet mask that feels wonderful during the first 48 hours after a CO2 laser treatment.

Second, apply a thin layer of healing ointment. Apply the ointment with clean Q-tips or freshly washed fingers. Choose an occlusive ointment that comes in a tube rather than a jar, which can introduce bacteria to healing skin.

Feel free to reapply as needed throughout the day to keep your skin from drying out.

Next, sleep with your head elevated and facing up for the first three nights; do your best not to sleep face down. This really helps reduce swelling, especially if we have treated your face.

And lastly, stay cool. No hot showers, no saunas, and no workouts that raise your body temperature. Heat increases swelling and can make you more uncomfortable than you need to be during these first few days.

Recovery & Transition (Days 4–10)

Around day four, your skin usually begins to move past the raw, oozing stage and starts to heal. At this point, you can begin to simplify your routine and treat your skin more gently.

Switch to a mild, hypoallergenic cleanser like those from Cetaphil or CLN MD. Wash with lukewarm water and clean hands, and avoid scrubbing. Your

skin is still healing underneath that surface. You’ll start to notice some bronze-toned crusting and peeling during this window, and I want you to let that shed completely on its own. Do not pick or pull at it. I know it’s tempting, but picking can lead to scarring or pigmentation issues, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to avoid.

During this phase, continue to avoid active ingredients, including retinoids, vitamin C, glycolic acid, and alcohol-based toners. Keep them out of your routine for at least two weeks. Your skin barrier needs time to recover, and reintroducing these products too soon can delay healing.

At this point, you can also switch from using an occlusive ointment to using a healing cream to moisturize your skin. I recommend using EpitonIQ’s Barrier Restoration Cream, which provides rich hydration.

Settling In (Weeks 2–6)

This is the recovery phase, when your skin moves from active healing toward settling into its new normal.

Around week two, you’ll usually see the pinkness start to fade, and this is typically when most patients are cleared to wear makeup again. I always recommend checking with us before restarting active ingredients like retinol or glycolic acid. Everyone heals at a different pace, so it’s important to make sure your skin is ready rather than guessing when to start using these products again.

Keep in mind that your skin’s texture can continue to improve for up to six weeks, and your final results may not be visible until six months after treatment.

So if you’re looking in the mirror at week three and thinking, “Is this it?”, I promise you, it’s not. Your skin is still settling in.

Sun & Environment Protection Throughout Recovery (Up to Week 6)

I especially want my Phoenix patients to pay attention to this next part because our climate presents some unique challenges for healing skin after laser treatment.

For the first stretch of healing, I recommend staying indoors as much as possible. If you do need to step outside briefly, wear a wide-brim hat with SPF 50+ coverage. Once you’re cleared off the heavy ointment, switch to a mineral sunscreen, meaning zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, with SPF 30 or higher. Mineral formulas tend to be gentler on healing skin than chemical sunscreens.

I also want you thinking beyond just sun. Phoenix has its own set of irritants that can bother healing skin, including dust, wind, pet dander, and aerosol sprays. Your skin is more sensitive than usual during recovery, so it’s important to be mindful of these irritants, not just direct sun exposure.

For more general guidance on protecting your skin from the sun, the AAD sun protection guidelines are a helpful resource.

Final Results (Months 2–6)

I always remind my patients that this is a gradual process, not an overnight fix.

Collagen remodeling is gradual, so the biggest improvements in texture and tone actually show up over months, not weeks. So don’t judge your results at the one-month mark; give it time.

This is also exactly where consistent sun protection pays off the most. If you’re diligent about protecting your skin while that new collagen is forming, you’re going to see a better, more even result. If you’re lax about it, you can undo a lot of that progress, which is the last thing you want after going through the recovery process.

Signs You Should Call Your Provider

Most of recovery is predictable, but I always want my patients to know what’s normal and what’s not. Give us a call if you notice increasing pain rather than gradual improvement, a fever, any discharge with an odor, or unusual blistering. These aren’t things to just wait out; I’d rather hear from you and reassure you than have you worry at home.

FAQs

How long does it take to recover from CO2 laser resurfacing?

Most of my patients are through the visible peeling and crusting within about 10 days, but I always tell people the full picture takes longer. Your skin keeps refining through about six weeks, and your best results really show up over two to six months as collagen rebuilds underneath.

When can I wear makeup after CO2 laser treatment?

I usually clear patients to wear makeup again around the two-week mark, once the pinkness has started to fade and the surface has fully settled. Everyone heals a little differently though, so I always want to see you in person before giving the official go-ahead.

Can I exercise or go outside during Arizona summer while healing?

I’d really hold off on intense exercise for at least the first week, since raising your body temperature can increase swelling. As for being outside, I recommend staying indoors as much as possible early on, and if you do need to step out, a wide-brim SPF hat is non-negotiable here in Phoenix.

What products should I use on my skin after CO2 laser?

For the first few days, apply a healing ointment with clean Q-tips and use diluted vinegar soaks to help manage discharge. Once your skin begins to heal, switch to a gentle, hypoallergenic cleanser. Avoid active ingredients like retinol and vitamin C for at least two weeks to give your skin time to recover.
